Little Studio Sneak Peak

I’m in the process of cleaning, purging and organizing my studio.  It’s finally starting to look like an actual art studio and not a storage room. I’ve only got about a quarter of the room done but I’m already inspired to start making things.  Next up, tackling the vintage clothing storage area in the room.

To D.I.Y for…make your own paint splattered shoes

I’m very attracted to the paint splatter look. I love it as a way to combine bright colors and its just fun.  I made these paint splatter shoes in less than 30 minutes (not including drying time). Can’t wait to wear them with a simple dress or jeans.

First, choose your color pallette and your shoes.  I found these great shoes at our local Goodwill and the paints are of the $1 craft store variety.  I chose thick, coarse brushes for larger splatters. If you want a more subtle look, use brushes with softer bristles.

Experiment with your technique and color combinations on paper before letting loose on your shoes.

You can wear these as is, or coat with a light spray polyacrylic sealant.

Enjoy!

To D.I.Y. For: Vintage Magazine Rack Made Lovely with Paint

I just became the owner of this lovely but lackluster mid-century magazine rack (thanks, Carrie).  While it has great bones, it was worn and a bit boring.  I decided to bring it back to life with a little rainbow paint treatment.  This project is simple as can be. I used glossy enamel craft paint which isn’t as high quality as I’d use if I intended to sell the piece but  just fine for my own home.

The fun polka dot notebook I bought from a 100 Yen store in Tokyo became my color inspiration.

I have to admit the first few coats in looks a little scary. While the enamel paint adhered well to the metal, the brush strokes were very obvious.  I continued to water down the paint  and ended up layering about 5 coats.  Make sure you allow each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next.

After removing the painter’s tape, I only had minimal touch ups to clean up the lines.

If you want to apply a spray finish (not really necessary with enamel paint), allow it to dry for at least 24 hours.

My new magazine rack is so cheery and fun and kitty-approved!

What’s Black and White and Read all over? Etsy picks for the smart girl.

Here’s a sneak peak of an etsy treasury I curated yesterday.  I ended up liking it so much that I wanted to use it for a blog post. These are some of my favorite etsy shops and well as favorite etsy product and fashion photographers. I enjoy etsy almost as much for the photography as I do for the unique products. Hope this inspires…

Vintage secretary dress by Schmoo1515.  I love the coloring in this photo.

Fantastic bag by imaginelovelythings

I own the fabulous mug in this picture. Now, I think I may need this print by  AlicaBruce .  The colors are dreamy.

This fantastic hair tie by OhHunnyHush.  I love everything about this shop; the name,  the product, the model’s look and the photography. So perfectly perfect!

I almost thought that this sassy dress by ViciousThreads was vintage. It’s so classic, yet the hemline is modern and fresh; as well as the styling.

This high-wasted skirt by SewMoe “The Miss Boothby” would be a classic addition to any smart lady’s wardrobe.  The shop photography is always a joy as well. Such cool inspiration!

Vintage Travel Guides

I’ve recently become the proud owner of a huge box (HUGE!) of vintage travel ephemera. In sifting through it, I’ve realized that the couple that collected this stuff lived quite the life.  I’m going to be posting limited amounts of this stuff on my etsy site.  Here’s a sneak peak…

Just listed on etsy

I love the oversaturation.

These would be so fabulous for travel scrapbooking or collage work.

More to come!
